Nokia Announces its Best Windows Phone Yet: The Lumia 1020 with 41 MP Camera

Windows Phone fans, the moment you all have been waiting has arrived as Nokia, the most-prominent WP8-utilising company announces its next flagship.
The new Lumia 1020 smartphone marks a huge moment, both for the platform and for the smartphone industry in general. The phone’s announcement wasn’t as exciting however as almost all of the specs and introductory videos were already leaked online before the official word. Here’s the phone in detail:

Design

The Nokia Lumia 1020 looks a lot like its predecessor, the Lumia 920 and other phones in this series. The body is made of unpainted polycarbonate plastic and the design is unibody. The front is almost identical to the 920. The display, 1.2 megapixel HD camera, soft-keys and sensors are housed there. The back however is the center of all of the attention. It houses the bumped-up camera which protrudes out, unlike the 920. The 41 megapixel camera is accompanied by a Xenon and an LED Flash. (More on that later).
The device is overall much more compact and slimmer. It weighs an acceptable 158g now and is 10.4mm thick.

Display

The display uses almost the same tech as its predecessor. It’s a 4.5 inch AMOLED panel with the same resolution of 768 x 1260 pixels. It features the same supersensitive touch which means you can use it with almost anything and the PureMotion+ HD, which means buttery smooth graphics and animations.
The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. If the lack of Full HD resolution is a bummer for you, then you need to know that Windows Phone itself currently doesn’t support it right now.

Camera

And here’s the main reason why you’re here. The Lumia 1020 features a ground-breaking 41 megapixel camera, quite identical to the 808 PureView with a large 1/1.5” Back-illuminated sensor and 6-element Zeiss lens. Optical Image Stabilization promises blur-free result.
The camera lens features mechanical shutter with f/2.2 aperture. It features the same pixel oversampling tech where you combine several pixels to make a giant pixel for better snap quality. The camera can also take a 38 or 34 megapixel image and a 5 megapixel oversampled image at the same time (which is much more Facebook-friendly).
As for the video, the phone takes 1080p Full HD videos at 30fps and can have up to 4x zoom (or 6x zoom in 720p mode). What’s also worth noting is that the zoom here is lossless. The two built-in mics make sure that the audio captured is clear even in loud atmospheres. Oversampling can also be done in videos at an staggering rate of up to 1 billion pixels per second. Now that is something!
The lens is accompanied by Xenon and LED Flashes for stills and videos respectively (they’ve combined elements from both N8/808 and the Lumia series here). The camera sensor and lens itself are completely new and much more compact, faster too. The BSI sensor is a bit smaller than the 808 and so are the pixels at 1.1 micron.
The camera software is also worth writing about. The Lumia 1020 features the powerful Nokia Pro Camera app where you can manipulate the result of your photos (including ISO and shutter speeds) at will. It can capture two shots of 34/38 and 5 megapixel at once (we’ve already talked about this). The interface is ring-like, where the different settings are scrolled up and down. You also get a full-manual mode, perhaps a first for a smartphone and a thing found mostly in professional cameras.
The physical shutter key adds to the camera-like experience. Nokia has announced a new SDK which will be used by app developers to take full advantage of the phone’s camera. A few apps like CNN, Flipboard, Path and Vine have already started utlising it.
And that’s about it for the camera. If you’re a shutterbug, it will alone be a strong reason for you to buy this phone, as it’s not only several lightyears ahead of almost all other phone cameras, but also because the operating system surely has a future ahead (unlike Symbian).

Software

We’ve already talked about the Pro Camera app of this phone but the rest of the software is pretty much standard Windows Phone stuff. You do get the Nokia-only software which is quite a perk and a huge distinguishing feature of the company’s WP8 smartphones.
A new feature which debuted on the Lumia 925 is ‘Glance’ which is a clock that appears on the homescreen. It can also display a few notifications and your phone’s status.
Other than that, you get Nokia’s popular HERE service, along with apps like Nokia Music, Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive which are all pretty valuable. The phone runs on Windows Phone 8 and the next major step for it will be the 8.1 update. Still, the phone is decidedly lacking in the OS front and that’s solely Microsoft’s fault.

Hardware

The phone’s hardware is nothing revolutionary. Under the hood you get a 1.5 Ghz dual-core Krait processor with Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 chipset and Adreno 225 GPU.
The amount of RAM is set at 2 GB, highest for a Windows Phone yet, along with 32 GB non-expandable storage (a 64 GB version will be there as well but that might be a bit unique). You’ll also get 7 GB of free SkyDrive storage.

Connectivity and miscellaneous

The Lumia 1020 covers almost all the sections in the connectivity department. You get 4G LTE to start with, then NFC and wireless charging (more on that in a minute) and finally get Bluetooth 3.0, microUSB 2.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi. You don’t get Infrared however but it’s still not essential anyway, atleast for the time being.
As for the wireless charging, it works with a snap-on accessory and isn’t built-in. The reason given is valid too: increased weight and thickness.
The phone is powered by a 2,000 mAh battery, which must’ve raised some eyebrows (HD screen, 41 mp camera, dual-core processor, really Nokia, really?) but we’ll have to wait and judge it by its performance in real life.

Camera Grip accessory

Out of all the accessories, including the snap-on wireless charging cover Nokia has shown today, the one which truly stands out most is the Camera Grip. It’s a sort of a frame or a shell which houses the phone inside it. It adds a bigger shutter key and also a 1020 mAh battery. A tripod can also be attached at the bottom of the accessory. The Camera Grip will retail separately for $79.

Pricing and availability

The phone will start selling later this month in China and several American & European markets. In the US, AT&T will sell this phone for $299 with a contract, a decidedly large sum for the phone as most flagships retails for $199. The more important however is the off-contract price, which matters for markets like ours, but is still hidden under the curtains as of now which is a shame.
Still, considering the history of Nokia’s flagships, the phone might get launched at a price tag of about Rs. 70,000, which is steep but should settle a bit with the hype.
There was a reason why Stephen Elop looked so happy today. Even some pessimists couldn’t help applaud the Nokia CEO. The Nokia Lumia 1020 marks an important moment in the company’s history. The 808 PureView was a great, but niche device which wasn’t even launched in several markets. Nokia might achieve its goal with this phone at last.

That being said, the phone isn’t flawless. The software still lacks some important features like multitasking, the processor and GPU are a bit archaic and the battery is quite small. But that all can be neglectted if you’re a shutterbug, because you’ll always be reminded by the image quality that you are holding a marvel of engineering in your hands. We can only imagine what the future will be like.

لومیا 925 میں پہلی بار پیش کی گئی نئی خصوصیت ‘گلانس’ بھی موجود ہے جو ہوم اسکرین پر ظاہر ہونے والی ایک گھڑی ہے۔ یہ متعدد نوٹیفکیشن اور آپ کے فون کا اسٹیٹس بھی دکھا سکتی ہے۔

What is the criteria of having a good App Store? Is it the number of apps? Or should quality be preferred over quantity. For most companies, its the quality that matters. Apple is known to have boasted a lot about the 900,000 apps figure even though it doesn’t represent the entire figure.
According to Adeven, a new analytic company, most apps in App Store haven’t been downloaded more than a few times.
“579,001 apps out of a total of 888,856 apps in our database are zombies,” Adeven says. These apps have never ever taken a spot at the top thousand rankings.
But while Apple has never released figures for such apps, these ‘zombie’ apps may not be so much of a failure at all, but still don’t encourage app developers to keep developing.

“They may still receive a couple of downloads every day – maybe even up to 100 or so – but that is not going to be enough for a developer to capitalise on or draw motivation from to support the app.”

According to another research some time back, the App Store contained 9,000 flashlight applications which alone explains the whole situation.
Still, this again proves that when it comes to application stores, its the top quality apps which matter most. As long as the basic ones are covered, the store can be deemed reputable. And it won’t be wrong if said that it were those 35% apps which achieved the 50 billion downloads figure.

SanDisk Announces World's Fastest Memory Cards

SanDisk, the famous company which specializes in making storage devices has announced the world’s fastest SDXC cards yet. The new Extreme Micro-SDXC lineup will have reading speeds of up to 80 MB/s and 50 MB/s writing speeds.
That’s almost double the speeds of its predecessor, the Ultra Micro-SDXC lineup which had speeds of 30 MB/s. According to SanDisk, this will prove to be a big step towards fast data transfers, video streaming and in photography, where the high bitrate in things like 1080p video and burst-shooting is a bit of a drag on current cards.
The cards will be available in 16 and 64 GB versions. They will be available for $59.99 and $199 respectively which is considerably more expensive than the previous cards.
Availability details are unknown as of now but it should be available later this year.

The ailing PC market is currently seeing its condition get from bad to worse, as once flourishing computer manufacturers are folding and seeing the inevitable fate becoming a reality quickly.
HP, just one among them, has been seeing such times as well since quite a long time and now has seen itself being overtaken by Lenovo to slip down the rank of the world’s largest manufacturer.
The new statistics by Gartner tell us that the Chinese company shipped 12.6 million PCs in the last quarter, attaining a marketshare of 16.7 percent, compared to HP’s 12.3 million (16.4 percent). Dell and Acer filled the next spots by shipping 9.2 and 6.2 million PCs respectively, followed by ASUS which shipped 4.59 million units.
The PC market overall dropped 14 percent over the last year, shipping only 75.6 million units. This happened despite the fact that new Windows 8-running systems flooded the market.
The times certainly won’t be changing anytime soon for the PC vendors have customers flocked towards the tablet & portable gadget markets, keeping well clear of the formerly-ruling industry.
Still, some markets such as India showed some positive signs so instead, this time it might be the developing markets which will lead the way forward.

FIFA 13, the latest instalment of the fabled soccer series has arrived to the Nokia Lumia smartphones but not to the platform as a whole. What’s more is that the game isn’t even available on Android right now.
The game is Xbox-Live enabled, of course given the platform. It features new gameplay elements including more improved controls. The graphics are also taken to a new level.
The game features over 15,000 players in 500 teams. There’s no shortage of background either 32 stadiums, where players will be playing in a total of 30 leagues.
The game is available now for only $4.99. The game file itself is monstrous at 951 MB so if you’re willing to download it, be sure to get hold of a good Wi-Fi connection.
Still, it’s a bit puzzling to see the game available only at Lumia’s but there’s nonetheless a reason as the Lumia brand name is itself more popular than Windows Phone. And even by limiting itself to those few smartphones, EA is making the game accessible to almost all people with a Windows Phone.

Nokia Unveils 207, 208 and 208 Dual SIM

Nokia has unveiled the 207 and 208 Officially. Both run on the Series 40 mobile operating system, but do not feature the recently revamped Asha interface debuted on the Nokia Asha 501.

System:

The two feature phones sport a 2.4-inch QVGA display, a 1020 mAh battery, 64BM of RAM and 256 MB of internal storage, expandable to up to 32GB through a microSD card slot.

Weight:

Both handsets weigh in at roughly 90 grams, and are 114.2 x 50.9 x 12.8mm in size. The only hardware feature separating the two is the camera; the Nokia 208 is equipped with a 1.3-megapixel rear-facing camera, while the Nokia 207 is sold without.

Apps:

The two feature phones support mobile Internet speeds of up to 3.5G and come with Nokia’s usual array of Series 40 software and tricks, including Nokia Express Browser and social apps such as Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Colors:

The two new handsets will be available in red, cyan, yellow, white and black when they do on sale in the third quarter of 2013.

ZTE Releases First Firefox OS-Running Phone at $90

After some solid amount of hardwork on a comparatively low budget, the first Firefox OS-running phone, the ZTE Open goes on sale today. The phone is a lower-end device and features a 3.5 inch touchscreen.
As for the specs, the phone consists of nothing earth-shattering materials. Its 3.5 inch display has 320 x 480 resolution. Under the hood you get 256 MB RAM, 1Ghz Cortex A5 processor and Adreno 200 GPU. The back boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera.
For connectivity you get Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB 2.0 and 3G. These are all aging specifications coupled by a meager hardware by today’s standards but the Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich thinks it’s enough. “We are not aiming high and trying to crash into Fortress Apple, into Fortress Google”, he says.
Just enough though, the phone is still a bit clunky right now as The Verge noted. The OS still has its rough edges and if you’re coming from a touchscreen device, you’re most probably in for a disappointment. That might be a hardware issue as the phones do run on pretty 2009-stuff but lets hope everything will be sorted out soon.
The ZTE Open is available for $90 or around Rs. 11,000 when it hits any online store later this year. The dream of seeing a phone run smoothly and without stutters on a platform like this won’t be fulfilled right now though.

Windows Store Reaches 100,000 Apps

Windows Store platform for Microsoft Windows8 and RT operating system has just reached one hundred thousand applications milestone. The results announced via Twitter, it only took seven months to complete, unlike Microsoft had predicted.

Announced just days after the company announced that the store reach 100,000 applications margin. 7 month compared, Android's lasted 18 months to achieve the feat, and iOS took 14.

The news, however, is the greatest for the Windows RT platform which can’t run legacy programs and is reliant on the Store solely for content. This, then, should help the OS to garner some new potential buyers as the main apps are almost all onboard now with the remaining ones coming in the meantime. Also along with the launch of RT 8.1, success might not be that far really, unless luck is really against them.
